Graph Theory through games that can be played on a table or on the playground. Graphs are mathematical objects that are made of dots connected by lines. Graph Theory is the branch of mathematics that involves the study of graphs. Graphs are very powerful tools for creating mathematical models of a wide variety of situations. Graph theory has been instrumental for analyzing and solving problems in areas as diverse as computer network design, urban planning, and molecular biology. Graph theory has been used to find the best way to route and schedule airplanes and invent a secret code that no one can crack.

Build A Rainbow - How are rainbows formed? Why do they only occur when the sun is behind the observer? If the sun is low on the horizon, at what angle in the sky should we expect to see a rainbow? This laboratory, developed as part of the University of Minnesota Calculus Initiative, helps to answer these and other questions by examining a mathematical model of light passing through a water droplet.

Map Coloring - Coloring is a profound mathematical topic with many multi-million-dollar industrial applications. The problem presented here has been of interest to mathematicians for over a hundred years. Some versions of the problem are easy to solve, others have yielded only recently to relentless efforts that would not have been possible without the aid of powerful computers. In all of its aspects, the basic problem is the same: How many colors do you need? With a few crayons or markers and some hand-drawn maps, children can quickly find themselves grappling with some of the same conundrums that contemporary mathematicians do. Four-color map problem. Activities, Background Information, Evaluation.

Perspective Drawing - Examination of geometry in art. Exercises in drawing, pictures and paintings in perspective on the Web

Untangling The Mathematics Of Knots - A hands-on exploration of the fundmental ideas of Knot Theory. A variety of activities for exploring knots made from pieces of rope. Students can make and verify observations about knots, classify them, combine them, and find ways to determine if two knots are alike. The activities outlined can be combined to form a single lesson about mathematical knots, or a larger investigative unit that extends over a longer period of time. The sequence in which the activities are listed is roughly in order of increasing difficulty and challenge, but all of the earlier activities are not strict prerequisites for the later ones.

Carl's Calculus Tutor

"Prisoner's Dilemma" (Axelrod, 1984). The two players in the game can choose between two moves, either "cooperate" or "defect". The idea is that each player gains when both cooperate, but if only one of them cooperates, the other one, who defects, will gain more. If both defect, both lose (or gain very little) but not as much as the "cheated" cooperator whose cooperation is not returned. The whole game situation and its different outcomes can be summarized by table 1, where hypothetical "points" are given as an example of how the differences in result might be quantified.
