African American Heritage Park

|
| The park was designed to co-exist with the original landscape of the cemetery and preserves the interesting and varied plant life on this site. The park's innovative plan also sustains a wetland area that provides a home for mallards, painted turtles, beavers and crayfish in their natural habitat. The focal point of the park is a sculpture group of bronze trees called "Truths that Rise from the Roots Remembered" by sculptor Jerome Meadows. This formation acknowledges the contributions of African Americans to the growth of Alexandria. Other smaller sculptures throughout the park commemorate historic African American neighborhoods and the people known and unknown buried on this site.

African-American History Tour of Alexandria

|
| This walking tour is perfect for families, student groups, reunions, and group outings.
You'll see Market Square, where human beings of dark coloration were bought and sold. It is near a prosperous merchant's home who owned 30 slaves. Nearby is an abolitionist Quaker's shop, who said of slavery, “it sickens my heart to reflect upon it.” And African-Americans staged America’s first sit-in here.

The great hall, with its original 16th-century oak paneling, rises over two-stories and is surmounted by a minstrel's gallery. A magnificent mullioned bay window, 10 feet high and 25 feet long, bears the ancient coat of arms of its former owners in stained glass. Its 23 acres of lawns and gardens overlook the river.

Archer's Hope

|
| On May 12, a point of land at the mouth of Archer's Hope Creek (now College Creek), a little below Jamestown, was examined in detail. Capt. Gabriel Archer was particularly impressed with this location and urged that it be the point of settlement. The soil seemed good, timber and wildlife were abundant, and it appeared adaptable for defensive measures if these should become necessary. It was not possible, however, to bring the ships close to the shore, and consequently Archer's Hope was rejected. From this site the ships moved directly to Jamestown, where they arrived May 13.

Ball-Sellers House

|
| Donated to the Arlington Historical Society in 1975, this is Arlington's oldest residence. It was built around 1742. It is a rare example of the homes where the working class people of the time lived. It is occupied by a caretaker for the Society and the interior may be seen by calling ahead. The small house - with its original logs, clapboard roof and pegged floorboards - is one room with a loft and an attached lean-to room at the rear. The house was built by John Ball on a 166-acre land grant from Lord Thomas Fairfax and later owned by William Carlin, tailor to George Washington. Three generations of the Carlin family owned the property for more than 100 years. The third generation, brother and sister Andrew and Anne, ran a dairy farm and built the 1880 house that adjoins the Ball cabin.

Barboursville Ruins

|
| Preserved as a ruin after its destruction by fire on December 25, 1884, Barboursville was one of the largest and finest residences in the region. The only building in Orange County known to have been designed by Thomas Jefferson, Barboursville was constructed between 1814-1822 for Jefferson's friend James Barbour, who served as governor of Virginia, U.S. senator and secretary of war. A brick Flemish-bond mansion with a hipped roof, Barboursville stood two stories high over an English basement. After the fire, the family renovated a pair of brick dependencies to the west of the mansion. Today the estate is run as a vineyard. Each August Barboursville Vineyards cosponsors "Shakespeare at the Ruins."
